It’s that time of year, sniffles, fevers, stuffy, achy… the list could go on. I’m a couple months late making it this year, but it is better late than never! Typically you will like to have this made before school season hits because that’s when the contagious viruses seem to activate!
My go-to for the last 15 years for my family has been garlic oil. It is so versatile and powerful yet gentle enough for the newest infant. It is easy to make and you more than likely have everything you need right now to make it.
Go ahead, I’ll wait while you go grab a bunch of garlic cloves, a glass jar, a knife, a cutting board, and extra virgin cold pressed olive oil or avocado oil. You can make this as fast as you can peel garlic!
- Peel and chop the garlic.
- Place in a glass jar.
- Pour the oil of choice over that garlic, covered by about an inch
- Put the lid on and set it in a south-facing window for 3 days to 3 weeks
You can shake the jar every now and then to stir up the contents, but it isn’t necessary. After you have let it sit, then strain the garlic out and store it in a cool dry place. You can put it in a dropper bottle for easy administration – it’s my favorite!
Now that you have it made and sitting in the window, let’s go over WHY and HOW to use it.
Garlic- known as “poor man’s penicillin” is a strong and effective anti-biotic. But this isn’t all, it is anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial. It has a strong affinity for the lungs and respiratory system and actually supports beneficial bacteria. It is great for digestion and kills yeast overgrowth.
We use it for colds and flu, but we have also used it for yeast infections, ear infections, skin, and wound care.
While older kids and adults can take chopped garlic like a pill to support their immune system, garlic oil is perfect for toddlers and infants. Here are a few ways we use it:
- Massage into glands, neck, and chest
- Take a spoonful by mouth
- Drip into ears and plug with a cotton ball overnight
- Apply to scratches and cuts for disinfecting (you can do this with animals too!)
- Apply to horse frogs for thrush
